Just Beneath the Surface

Microsoft have finally unleashed the successor to their solid Surface Book 2 and it is quite the portable monster. If you were to glance at the Book 3 and mistake for a 2, no one would fault you for it. Aesthetically they appear almost identical. However, the book 3 is packing a lot of big changes internally to set apart not only from its previous iterations, but from its competitors as well.

Sporting either a 10th Gen i5/i7 processor, up to 32 GBs of RAM, and up to a 1660 Ti NVIDIA GeForce GPU, the Surface Book 3 packs a wallop for the kind of portability it offers. You can also upgrade to an  Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q GPU if you desire that extra oomph. While it’s not necessarily designed to be a dedicated gaming solution, it’s still capable of offering decent performance results on most modern games. The Surface Book is designed almost specifically for producers and creatives that want speed and versatility on the go.

With the touch of a button, the Book 3’s screen can detach from its base and become a fully functioning tablet. Perfect for art and media production when you’re out and about and are hit with a burst of inspiration. The unit also sports a USB-C port along with a USB-A and SD card slot. The absence of a Thunderbolt 3 port is disappointing but not altogether a huge negative.

According to official specs from Microsoft, the Book 3 is capable of holding a 17.5 hr charge attached to its base for the 15″ model, and 15.5 hrs for the 13.5″ version. Microsoft has once again excelled in producing a very smooth, tactile feel with its keyboard. Buttons have just the right amount of ‘click’ without feeling spongy or cheap and don’t give the impression of wearing out over extended use.

Starting at $1,599.99 for the base 13.5″ model, the Surface Book 3 may or may not fit the budget of what you’re in the market for. Again, the main selling point of the Book 3 is its portability, ease of use, connectivity with Microsoft’s ecosystem, and versatility. If you can check off at least two of these then it might be worthwhile to look into Microsoft’s latest piece of hardware.
